Inspired by 70s pop, folk and country traditions, cabaret, jazz and classical music, Arc Iris is an eclectic new project from former Low Anthem member, Jocie Adams. She draws on diverse music from Led Zeppelin to Grizzly Bear, from Joni Mitchell to Dirty Projectors, and from Miles Davis to Chopin.A singer, multi-instrumentalist, classical composer and former NASA researcher, Adams, who hails from Rhode Island, formed the Arc Iris collective to present her ambitious new songs. Bringing together such disparate influences requires not only a sweeping technical expertise but also a fair amount of nerve. This week, London, England’s Guardian newspaper described Arc Iris’s new record like this, “One minute they’re an alt country band, the next they’re coming on like Liza Minelli in Cabaret. There are good reasons for this.”

The good reasons are in evidence on the self-titled debut, due out on April 1 on Anti, home of an A-list of contemporary artists including, Daniel Lanois, Billy Bragg, Kate Bush, Kronos Quartet, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and The Black Keys, among others. The industry has taken Arc Iris seriously; the first video for the band’s first single, “Singing So Sweetly,” recently premiered on Filter’s website. The second video, “Whiskey Man” debuted on Rolling Stone’s video page. The Huffington Post premiered an album track, “Canadian Cowboy.”

And the Boston Globe, also ahead of the album’s release, said this: “Arc Iris is the sound of an artist reborn. The band’s self-titled debut…brims with whimsy and flights of fancy, informed as much by Joni Mitchell as it is by ’70s prog-rock, Björk’s sonic experiments, and sweeping film soundtracks. It’s hypnotic.”

Before departing The Low Anthem to form Arc Iris, Adams released two albums with that band, who were praised by the New York Times for music that “inhabits its own otherworldly place, where ghosts and angels hover just out of view” and by Under the Radar for how they “flawlessly balance heartfelt warbles with gritty countryside wail.”

After their show at Bellows Falls Windham Ballroom on April 5, Arc Iris head to New York City to headline the famed Mercury Lounge. It’s rare for an artist on a trajectory so steep as this to find themselves in Bellows Falls on a Saturday night. Gary Smith, booker at the Windham Ballroom can hardly contain his excitement. “We’re honored to have Ms. Adams and the band here in BF, music lovers of almost any genre can appreciate what this group is doing and we expect that watching these extraordinarily talented people tie the variety together will be a wonder-filled experience.”
