Radioke first gained popularity in the fall of 2010 when the nation’s first live-to-air karaoke contest was broadcast by WOOL.fm and attracted all manner of shower singers and seasoned chanteuses to the community space at 33 Bridge Street.
It was there that John-Michael, Kristen, and Gary found each other and subsequently hatched the ideas of Popolo. At the time, John-Michael was serving up a heaping helping of tasty crooning, Kristen was keeping the room in order, and Gary was back counting the votes and handling the details.
Radioke, as always, is a fundraiser. Admission will be only $5, and proceeds from the door and a nice percentage of the bar will be going to Black Sheep Radio, our non-profit community broadcaster. All performances will be aired live on WOOL 100.1 FM, but this really is something that you want to experience first hand. You can buy tickets here and now for the first show. Tickets will be available at the door, but only 120 tickets will be sold for each session!
Radioke IV, Session 1 – $5. Print your receipt and bring it with you when you come.
The way it works is this: on February 23 and March 9, contestants will square off for a spot in the finals on March 23. There is not much time to make your stand! Of a dozen contestants each night, only five will be selected for the third night, the FINALS. On March 23 the assembled ten semi-finalists will face off for three prizes totaling the as-yet-to be-disclosed bucket of cash.
The prize money is yet to be counted but this contest will be fast and furious. Every other Saturday for just three weeks we’ll see the thrill of victory and the agony of the ears. Some of our contestants bring their surprising mellifluousness to the stage and others will make a criminal racket that is nonetheless lovable. As always, it’s all up to the judges… and though they’re not all confirmed, it appears we might see all the same judges from rounds I, II, and III. Stay tuned.
Anyone with an admission ticket can be a contestant — but only the first dozen people to sign up at Sessions 1 or 2 can compete, so don’t be late!
First and foremost, we want this to be fun for all concerned and we hope you enter this contest in the spirit in which it’s held: namely, the spirit of community.
You’ll need to sign a document giving WOOL permission to air your performance, both live and recorded.
The competition will be held in front of a live audience, and broadcast live on the air at 100.1FM and on the internet at www.wool.fm. It may be rebroadcast in whole or part.
On each night of Session 1 and Session 2 there will be 12 contestants, first come / first served.
A contestant can be either a soloist or a duet.
The host will determine the running order of the contestants. Contestants not present for their scheduled slot will be disqualified.
Songs will be selected from a supplied song list on the night of competition unless contestants bring their own music; contestants supplying their own music need to submit songs in CDG format on the night of competition before the competition gets started. Songs must be shorter than 5 minutes.
While on the air, participants may not use language inappropriate for broadcast including expletives, vulgarity, discriminatory language, etc., even if it’s in the lyrics of a song. The organizers may, at their discretion, interrupt or discontinue any performance deemed inappropriate for broadcast; there will be no recourse.
Judging is subjective and based on timing, pitch, and performance. (Performance is the unique quality brought to the song by the contestant. Ham it up!) Ties will be broken by the volume of applause from the audience when called for by the host.
If a finalist isn’t present on March 23, they’ll be disqualified and the host will fill the slot with a previous contestant or with a person of his choice.
Participants release WOOL and Popolo and their parent companies from any claims arising from participation in this contest. Participants are responsible for any and all taxes on winnings. Participants under 18 years of age must have permission of a parent or legal guardian to participate in this contest, and the parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the release document.
